Thanks. :)

How many % am I likely gonna squeeze out after working through 88 pages?

Gern geschehen! :)

@Graham
That depends, for example, I've optimized my old laptop (i3 CPU, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD) and it literally flies. And most importantly, it's glitch-free. I don't hear any audio dropouts.

Give it a go, and share your experience! :)

Don't worry, there must be a standard disclaimer in a book and general advice that you make a full backup of your system, just in case (I do it every month).

You should be fine with the guidelines.

Theoretically speaking, a Windows feature update may break lots of things and make lots of headache (licensing, bugs, plugins that fail...). So, this book also shows advice on how to control these things. You want to control all these variables and your overall PC's behaviour.

Happy tweaking! :)

Ok, thanks, one more thing,

how do you measure your machine's performance?

Any elegant tricks for reliable measurements?

My feeling tells me that fecking box does different every day.. o_O

Please refer to this book. There are "performance apps" presented. You can include many counters (CPU, RAM, disk counters, etc, and monitor your performance through the specific period).

that's a pretty comprehensive guide over there, thanks for this! funny enough i already have a lot of ground covered, but there are even some news for an it nerd like me. awesome. i always wondered why i don't have too many problems with my very old hardware, in comparison to other people. now i know why :D

Thank you for kind words! :)
Yes, this guide really helps to have more control over Windows. Even with old hardware. I was able to play guitar with Plugin Alliance plugins (Diezel amp, etc.) even on a laptop with Core 2 Duo processor.

i have been mixing on my trusty lenovo w500 c2d for quite some time, and just started over doing so, again. :D it even handles some instances of helix native, along with a drum sampler and around 120 vsts. that's quite a number for 10+ years old hardware. i just love making things work. i even bought a faster low-power (both, really) cpu and 4gb additional ram for it for an extended usabilty. it's still only a c2d and 8gb ram

i'm very curious about how much i can squeeze out of it with the additional knowledge. this is gonna be fun

@Draiden : Seems I am not the only one still using C2D :D I have a 6850 + 4GB... quite old. But I like the Core CPUs they were a huge step up from the P4, much quiter and not getting hot easily also...

@GigStage : Cool guide, I also used most of the tipps, but will find some I can add to my system, so thanks..

Btw. most important seems to be getting rid of all "power saving" features and the internet (you can delete all I-net related thingies on WinXp or 7 with a few tricks, guess on 8/10 this might work too). Plus disable background tasks, auto upgrades and "anti virus" (many of these programs have given me themselves more trouble than actual viruses but when there is no net on the audio pc the risk for a virus is much smaller anyway)
