Bin gerade mal wieder über eine Frage gestolpert, wo jemand meint, wie es wäre sinnvoll auf -18 db zu recorden.
Daher frage ich mich, woher diese magic number kommt. Mir ist sie mal bei einem Audio Accustica Plugin über den Weg gelaufen. Da haben die scheins den referenzpunkt für 0db VU auf -18db FS festgelegt.
Ich hab dazu auch mal einen Artikel angefangen, allerdings auf Englisch. Kann mir jemand bestätigen, ob das so stimmt und ob/welche weitere Aspekte es zum Thema gibt?

When dealing with the information how loud/powerfull a signal is, the decibel is the unit of interest. But there are many scales of decibel values. One is the DB VU value. This is a unit that is often used in analog audio gear. Analog saturation becomes very audible and perceptable when the 0db VU is exceeded. Another scale is the db FullScale (Db FS) which is used in digital audio processing. Earlier we stated, that when using floating point numbers in a digital system, the amplitudes min/max value commonly ranges from -1.0 to +1.0. A wave oscillating within this full range would have a loudness of 0db FS.
Now when you think of a digital audio plugin, which simulates analog gear, which is often done to achieve analog saturation, there arises the question, which Loudness in the DB FS scale complies to 0db VU. This is done by defining that for example -18 db FS complies to 0 DB VU. This means, if you feed a signal > -18 db FullScale into a digital audio plugin that uses this definition, it will start to produce very audible analog saturation, just as a analog gear would do, if you exceed the 0db vu point. For common mixing issues you don't do that, just if you wanna have the sound of analog saturation which is somewhat a tiny version of a distortion unit.
